Pokemon Sword and Shield Shiny Odds
Sword and Shield split shiny hunting into two worlds: the Wild Area's KO-counted Brilliant Spawns, and the Crown Tundra's Dynamax Adventures, where every catch rolls 1 in 300 and the charm pulls it to 1 in 100. Breeding, raids and curry fill in the rest. The rates below match the community's datamine for the current patch; the calculator above never leaves Galar.

Pokemon Sword and Shield Shiny Odds: Every Route
Galar's hunts rarely share a table. Wild spawns and eggs use the standard base with charm rolls; Brilliant Spawns add rolls in steps as your KO count climbs; Dynamax Adventures are a separate gamble at 1 in 300. Raids, curry encounters and the Crown Tundra Regis skip boosts altogether.

A few hunts ignore the charm entirely: the Crown Tundra's Regis, and the fossils Cara Liss revives — the one gift family that can shine — stay at the plain 1 in 4,096. Every other gift Pokemon cannot be shiny at all; the lock list below names the rest.

Shiny-Locked Pokemon in Sword and Shield
Galar locks its gifts rather than most of its legends. The gift starters (breedable, just never shiny as handouts), the Postwick Charmander, the Gigantamax Pikachu and Eevee from Let's Go save data, the Wedgehurst Slowpoke, the Battle Tower Type: Null, the Route 5 Toxel and the scripted Corvisquire on Route 3 are all shut off — plus Zacian, Zamazenta, Eternatus, the Galarian legendary birds, Keldeo, and the Crown Tundra's Calyrex, Glastrier and Spectrier. Wild Pokemon above your current catch level are locked as well, the ones the game flags as "very strong looking". Everything else is fair game, and most of the Crown Tundra's legendaries stay huntable through Dynamax Adventures.

How Long Does a Sword and Shield Hunt Take?
Galar's rates cover a wide range, so the same table of encounter counts tells very different stories depending on your route. The rows below give each headline rate its median hunt and its 99% point.
| Your shiny odds | Median hunt (50%) | 99% of hunters by |
| 1 in 4,096 (full odds) | 2,839 encounters | 18,861 encounters |
| 1 in 1,365 (Charm) | 947 encounters | 6,287 encounters |
| 1 in 585 (Brilliant Spawn, 500 KOs) | 406 encounters | 2,695 encounters |
| 1 in 455 (Brilliant Spawn, 500 KOs + Charm) | 316 encounters | 2,096 encounters |
| 1 in 300 (Dynamax Adventure) | 208 encounters | 1,380 encounters |
| 1 in 100 (Dynamax Adventure + Charm) | 69 encounters | 459 encounters |
The Max Lair is the outlier worth understanding: a 1 in 100 rate with four rolls per run means half of all hunters see a shiny within about 18 adventures, and 99% within 119. It is the closest thing the series has to a guaranteed delivery.
FAQ
Pokemon Sword and Shield Shiny Odds FAQ
What are the shiny odds in Dynamax Adventures?
Each Pokemon you catch from a run — the legendary at the end included — has a 1 in 300 chance of being shiny, which improves to 1 in 100 with the Shiny Charm. That 1 in 100 figure is the best repeatable rate in any Switch-era Pokemon game, and it is why the Max Lair stays busy years after release.
Are Max Raid battles good for shiny hunting?
Not for the odds. A raid's shininess is fixed when the beam first appears, at 1 in 4,096, and the charm cannot change it. Hunters who chase raid shinies re-roll dens by skipping days on the console until a shiny beam shows up — a different craft entirely from stacking odds.
How does the 500 KO method work in Sword and Shield?
The game tracks knockouts per species. Passing 100 KOs takes a Brilliant Spawn to four rolls, the 300 mark to six, and the 500 cap to seven — 1 in 585 before the charm, 1 in 455 with it. One KO is enough for auras to start appearing; everything after that is a grind for rolls.
What is a square shiny?
A Gen 8 sparkle variant, and the ratio depends on where it came from. From eggs, gifts, static encounters and Max Raids, squares are the rare ones at about 1 in 16 shinies. In the wild it is the other way round: a wild shiny is almost always a square, and the star animation is the scarce one, landing on about 15 of every 65,536 wild shinies.
What are the Masuda Method odds in Sword and Shield?
Six rolls per egg, about 1 in 683, or eight rolls and roughly 1 in 512 once the Shiny Charm is added. That matches every other Gen 6 and later game; the SwSh-specific detail is that the charm reaches eggs properly here, unlike the remakes of Diamond and Pearl.
Which Pokemon are shiny locked in Sword and Shield?
Broadly, the handouts: starters, the Postwick Charmander, Type: Null from the Battle Tower, the Route 5 Toxel and the Wedgehurst Slowpoke, alongside two Gigantamax gifts (Pikachu and Eevee) — plus Zacian, Zamazenta, Eternatus, the Galarian legendary birds, Keldeo and the Calyrex line. Wild Pokemon above your catch level are locked too. Legendaries inside Dynamax Adventures are not; those can shine.
