Pokemon stats and facts
Squirtle is Pokemon number 7 in the national dex and the Water-type starter of Kanto. It carries a 314 base stat total, evolves into Wartortle at level 16, and finishes as Blastoise at level 36 — the starter line famous for simply refusing to fall over. Torrent is the ability it always carries; Rain Dish waits in the hidden slot. Three stages, one region, and a reputation built on surviving things that end other runs.
Defensively only two types do real damage here: Electric and Grass, both at double. Everything else is either resisted (Fire, Water, Ice and Steel) or neutral, which adds up to more safe switches than scary ones — and that is why the line holds up over a full playthrough, not just a single fight. The Water type does most of that work on its own.
Monotype Water keeps the job simple on both ends: one very safe attacking type, and a defensive side with two manageable weaknesses. Fire, Water, Ice and Steel all bounce off it, while the things that resist Water — Grass, mostly — are easy to spot and easy to switch out of. For a run decided by attrition, that is the profile you want: fewer surprises, more turns.
The stats finish the picture. Defense 65 is the anchor and Sp. Def 64 sits right behind it — this is a Pokemon built to take the hit and still be standing. Attack 48 and Sp. Atk 50 run close, with the special side a step ahead, so sets lean special by default. Nothing here is fast and nothing here is fragile: the trade is measured in turns, not in tempo.
Read the six numbers and everything points the same way: 44 HP, 48 Attack, 65 Defense, 50 Sp. Atk, 64 Sp. Def, 43 Speed. Defense leads, Sp. Def follows, and the offense sits in the middle of the card where it belongs on a wall — nothing here is meant to hit first or hit hard. The two numbers that shape the play are HP 44 and Speed 43: enough buffer to survive the early fights, and slow enough that the other side always moves first.
The catch is the same one every wall has: at 43 Speed it moves last, so every turn has to be spent well. The line levels that out with raw bulk — Wartortle arrives at 405 base stats, and the family runs 314 → 405 → 530 from first stage to last. A typical first-stage spread sits near 304, so 314 is a deliberately sturdy start. Build around the Defense, patch the Speed, and the trade is clear: tempo later, survivability now.
In practice the weak side is thin enough to plan around: Electric and Grass are the two types that punish mistakes, and in Kanto that means one gym in particular — Surge's Electric lineup is the fight this line wants no part of. Fire, Water, Ice and Steel barely tickle it by comparison. Give it a partner for the Electric matchups and the rest of its chart is a free ride.
If only one list sticks, make it the weak one: two types is short enough to memorize in the first five minutes, and it decides every switch that matters. The rest of the chart needs no study at all — the Water typing and those stats hold up in a normal playthrough and in a stricter run without any special handling. That is the whole appeal of the pick: the lowest-maintenance member of the squad.
In a Nuzlocke the question is simple: does it survive the next route and pay the debt back? Roll the run in the Nuzlocke Team Builder, and draw replacements from the Random Pokemon Picker when a slot opens mid-route. It slots in as the slow, safe half of the squad — the one you send out when a route looks genuinely risky. If two routes look equally dangerous, the Pokemon Wheel Spinner takes the decision for you.
Bulk buys turns, and turns win routes — which is the whole case for keeping this line. The Pokemon Team Picker shows where that durability sits beside the rest of the six, and the Pokemon Nature Chart maps out what a build trades away before you lock it in. The squad's least dramatic member is usually the reason the others get to be dramatic. When the run turns into a hunt, Pokemon Shiny Odds has the math and the Random Shiny Pokemon Generator has the roll, and the Blog holds the longer guides on natures, odds and challenge rules. The first two gyms are the investment; from the third badge onward, the line starts paying it back.
FAQ
Squirtle is a Water type: doubled damage from Electric and Grass, half damage from Fire, Water, Ice and Steel, neutral from everything else. That is the entire defensive picture, and two bad matchups is the fewest of any Kanto starter.
Electric and Grass, all at double damage — and in Kanto, Electric means one gym in particular. Fire, Water, Ice and Steel come in at half power, and the rest of the chart is neutral. Re-check the matchup card before a gym, a rival battle, or any fight that actually matters.
Squirtle evolves into Wartortle at level 16 and into Blastoise at level 36 — three stages, two fixed checkpoints, and the Water typing stays on board the whole way. No typing surprises: just a steady climb from 314 to 405 to 530 in base stat total.
Torrent is the standard ability and Rain Dish is the hidden one, and they read like two different plans: Torrent sharpens the Water attacks when the HP gets low, while Rain Dish turns rain into a slow heal. Rain Dish only shows up on hidden-ability finds, so most runs will never see it. Build for the one you actually have.
Three stages end to end: Squirtle, Wartortle at level 16, and Blastoise at level 36, with the base stat total climbing 314 → 405 → 530 along the way. The middle stage is where the shell matures: Wartortle's 80 Defense leads into Blastoise's 100.
Defense at 65 is the highest number in the spread, and it is the one the line is built around: take the hit, stay standing, answer on the next turn. Sp. Def 64 makes the special side nearly as safe.
