Pokemon Legends: Z-A Shiny Odds

Legends: Z-A keeps shiny hunting narrow: only wild spawns and fossils can shine, and the rate runs from 1 in 4,096 at full odds to about 1 in 585 when the Shiny Charm and a Level 3 Sparkling Power donut stack. Below, every Pokemon Legends: Z-A shiny odds figure the game can roll, plus a calculator that never leaves Lumiose.

The calculator is locked to Legends: Z-A. Switch on the boosts you are running — the Shiny Charm and your donut's Sparkling Power level — and the card shows your odds per wild encounter, the average encounters per shiny, and how long a hunt of that size can run at your pace. Fossils sit outside this model: they ignore the Charm and always roll the bare base rate.

Base rate 1 in 4,096 (community datamine, Mega Dimension update). The Charm adds three rolls here, one more than in most games; Sparkling Power adds one roll per donut level and only reaches spawns that share the donut's type.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A Shiny Odds: The Full Rate Table

The math follows the series rule: each encounter rolls the shiny check once, and every bonus adds rolls on top. Z-A's twist is its Charm, which contributes three rolls instead of the usual two — enough on its own to pull a bare spawn to 1 in 1,024, the same place a Level 3 donut lands. Together they reach seven rolls. These fractions come from the community datamine that arrived with the Mega Dimension update, not an official table.

Alphas roll on the same table as ordinary spawns, so an Alpha is a bigger target rather than a longer shot. The one weird spot is the guaranteed shiny from a Lv. 3 donut, covered below.

Mechanics

How Shiny Hunting Works in Legends: Z-A

Two levers move the rate in Z-A: the Charm and the donut. Here is how each behaves, plus the corners of the game where shiny hunting gets strange.

Sparkling Power donuts, level by level

Donuts baked from berries carry Sparkling Power, and each level adds a shiny roll to spawns that match the donut's type: one roll at Lv. 1, two at Lv. 2, three at Lv. 3. Two limits matter before you spend a good donut. The bonus only applies inside Hyperspace Distortions, so a Fire donut does nothing for the Water type beside you. And a Lv. 3 donut of any flavour forces the first close spawn that matches its type to be shiny — the game even posts a "Catch a Shiny Pokemon" task when you arrive in a Hyperspace Wild Zone, which is the indicator that one is on the map.

The Shiny Charm, and why it gives three rolls

Most games treat the Shiny Charm as a +2: it moves the base rate from 1 in 4,096 to roughly 1 in 1,365. Z-A hands out three rolls instead, which is why a charm-only hunt here sits at 1 in 1,024 — a third better than the same setup in Pokemon Sword and Shield Shiny Odds, where the charm alone gets you 1 in 1,365. The charm comes from Mable's research: clear every request in her thread and it is yours, with no Pokedex completion attached. It applies to every wild spawn in the game, Alphas included.

Fossils, Alphas and the Hyperspace scans

Fossils are the exception to almost every rule here. A restored fossil can be shiny at the plain 1 in 4,096, and it can come back as an Alpha at about a 1% rate, but the Shiny Charm does not apply to restores — a fossil hunt is full odds whether you own the charm or not. Five legendaries also slip past the usual lock: Latios, Latias, Cobalion, Terrakion and Virizion can turn up shiny through the Hyperspace special scans. Every other legendary stays locked, as the next section lays out.

Shiny-Locked Pokemon in Legends: Z-A

Z-A draws its locks around story beats and handouts. Your starter cannot be shiny, and neither can any scripted battle — the Rogue Mega fights are hard locked, DLC ones included, along with gift Pokemon and in-game trades. Every legendary is locked except the five special-scan species that appear in Hyperspace. What remains open is the wild: ordinary spawns, Alphas (the fixed ones count as wild, not static) and fossils are the three sources a shiny can come from.

In practice

How Long Does a Z-A Shiny Hunt Take?

A rate is the price of a ticket; the table below is how many tickets most people end up buying. Each row turns a Z-A rate into encounter counts — the median hunt, where half of all hunters are done, and the 99% mark, where almost nobody is still rolling.

Your shiny oddsMedian hunt (50%)99% of hunters by
1 in 4,096 (full odds)2,839 encounters18,861 encounters
1 in 1,024 (Charm or Lv. 3 donut)710 encounters4,716 encounters
1 in 585 (Charm + Lv. 3 donut)406 encounters2,695 encounters

Every encounter is an independent roll, so a hunt that runs past the median is not "due" for a shiny — a 10,000-encounter dry spell at full odds still happens to roughly one hunter in eleven. The calculator above converts your own pace, in encounters per hour, into a time estimate.

FAQ

Pokemon Legends: Z-A Shiny Odds FAQ

What are the shiny odds in Pokemon Legends: Z-A?

A wild spawn starts at 1 in 4,096. The Shiny Charm and a Level 3 Sparkling Power donut each lift a bare spawn to 1 in 1,024 on their own, and running both together tops out at 1 in 585 — the best repeatable rate the game offers.

How do you get the Shiny Charm in Legends: Z-A?

Complete Mable's research. Once every request in her thread is finished the charm is handed over, and from that point it adds three rolls to every wild encounter — three, not the usual two, which is why a charm-only hunt lands at 1 in 1,024.

Do Sparkling Power donuts stack with the Shiny Charm?

They do. The donut adds one roll per level and the charm adds three, so a Level 3 donut beside the charm reaches seven rolls and 1 in 585. Keep the types in mind: the donut bonus only reaches spawns that share its type, and only inside Hyperspace Distortions.

Can fossils be shiny in Legends: Z-A?

Yes. A restored fossil shines at 1 in 4,096 and has a small chance to come back as an Alpha as well. The Shiny Charm does nothing for it, though — fossils ignore the charm completely, so each restore is a fresh full-odds roll.

Which Pokemon are shiny locked in Legends: Z-A?

Starters, gifts, trades and every scripted battle, plus each legendary except the five Hyperspace special scans: Latios, Latias, Cobalion, Terrakion and Virizion. Wild spawns, Alphas and fossils are the sources that can still produce a shiny.
